Historical Note by Rodney Atkinson: The Cornish “nationalists” are a tiny group promoting the Cornish language (died out 100 years ago) and Cornish independence from Britain. They have been stirred into action partly by justified anger at the destruction of the South West’s fishing grounds by the EU’s farcical Common Fisheries Policy and partly by the EU’s promotion of “regionalisation” as a means of breaking up the nation states of Europe. (Who says that failure does not have its rewards – that is the story of 50 years of the “European Community!)
The FUEV (Foederalistische Union Europaischer Volksgruppen, in English the FUEN Federal Union of European National Groups) was a Nazi racial propaganda organisation in the 1930s and 1940s. Its periodical Europa Ethnica is a continuation of the Nazi organ “Nation und Staat”. The origins of the group are in the racial geopolitics of the German State where the promotion of ethnic Germans in neighbouring countries was (and is today) seen as a method of breaking down other nations’ boundaries, re-uniting racial Germans and of German imperial expansion. By extending these racial politics to other “European Minorities without a kin state” the promotion of the purely German strategy could be camouflaged. FUEN is supported today by the German Government and is involved in European Union regional activities.
The Welsh Nationalists Plaid Cymru are associated with the FUEN. For previous articles on this subject see “Germany Calling” and for discussion of the “Regional Principle” see the book Europe’s Full Circle (this site under Publications).

The following piece describes the involvement of the Cornish Movement in FUEN. The FUEN issued the following press release concerning a visit by the Cornish Movement to the FUEN “Secretariat General” in April 2003.
CORNISH MOVEMENT VISITS THE FUEN SECRETARY GENERAL
Within the framework of a working session with the North Frisian organisation “Foriining for nationale Friiske” (Association for National Frisians) three Cornish representatives from FUEN´s associated member organisation “An Seneth Stenak Kernowek” (The Cornish Stannary Parliament) and the language association Agan Tavas (Our Language) stayed in North Friesland from 10th-13th April 2003. During these days (sic) they also took the opportunity to (sic) visit the FUEN Secretariat General in Flensburg. Among the visitors was also Dr. Nigel HICKS, candidate for the forthcoming election as FUEN vice-president.
After FUEN Executive Secretary Frank NICKELSEN introduced the delegates to the aims and actual work of the FUEN there was time for questions and discussion. The Cornish are especially interested in FUEN´s future programme for small ethnic groups without a so-called kin-state. In this connection they also confirmed the participation of the Cornish minority at the 2nd Seminar for minorities without »kin-state« in Poland which will take place from 10th – 11th June 2003 at the Kasubian Folk University in Starbienino.
Within the FUEN Cornish have built up some international contacts, especially with the North Frisians. Both are small minorities without a kin-state and want to develop a closer partnership.
