Swedes cannot vote on the destruction of their own Constitution
Dateline 23rd December 2004
It was reported in early December by EU Observer that there will be no referendum in Sweden on the new EU Constitution. Of course to be more precise we should say “a new Swedish Constitution” (and of course a new German, British, French etc Constitution as well because all those democratic constitutions will also disappear).
Most eurosceptic analysts of the “EU Constitution” say it is revolutionary because the text states that “EU Law shall have primacy over domestic law”. But that has been the case for decades (ever since a European Court ruling in 1964 – for those countries which have been members that long). Today, according the text of this proposed Constitution the position is far worse.
The words of the relevant Article (I-10) are groundbreaking because of the first two words:
“The Constitution and law adopted by the Union’s Institutions in exercising competences conferred on it shall have primacy over the law of the Member States”.
There may be one or two gullible and naïve people in the world who believe Blair and Straw when they say “it is a constitution like that of a golf club”. But we all know – and we know that the arch eurofederalists know – that any International Court and certainly the all-powerful and highly politicised “European Court” will interpret the word Constitution to mean just that.
It is impossible to live under two Constitutions with their separate Courts. One MUST BE superior to the other and sure enough what we have here is the superiority of the EU – with its Constitution, Constitutional Court, embryo Euro Army, Executive, Legislature, passport etc etc.
So the Swedes are about to abolish Sweden – but the Swedish people will not be able to vote on the matter! There has been a stitch up of the kind we have observed all over Europe between the four right-wing opposition parties in the Swedish Parliament and the Social Democrat Prime Minister Göran Persson. As in Britain these arrogant little nonentities believe that sovereignty rests with Parliament and that because they control Parliament (today) the people should do as they are told (for ever or irrevocably and irreversibly as the EU Treaties say). This is the Mitterand, Chirac, Kohl and Schroeder School of Democracy. (Blair has only agreed to a referendum in Britain as an electoral ploy against the Conservative Opposition.)
But as we have demonstrated in our British democratic alternative (The South Molton Declaration, www.southmoltondeclaration.org.uk soon to be re-named The British Declaration of Independence) IT IS THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SOVEREIGN IN A DEMOCRACY NOT THE PARLIAMENT.
Parliament merely represents the people’s Sovereignty for a limited term. At elections that sovereignty should be handed back in tact, in toto, to the electors. But what we have seen throughout Europe for the past 40 years is the slow, covert, destruction of that sovereignty so that by the time elections come there is little left to vote for – which is why even in the UK only 59% of the electorate voted at the 2001 general election! Why vote for a Parliament which has become an empty shell?
In Sweden the Government will present the EU Constitution Bill to the parliament in May in order to have it passed in December 2005. The two leftist parties in the Parliament and the eurosceptic June List holding, three seats in the European Parliament, had called for a referendum and said a decision should not be taken this side of the general election. Several Swedish MPs are expected to go against their party line and vote no to the Constitution in the Parliament.
One of them, Social Democrat Sören Wibe, described the decision not to have a referendum as “a parody of democracy”. “They are afraid of consulting the citizens directly in a referendum”, he told the EUobserver.
The Swedes rejected the Euro in a referendum in September 2003 against all odds and against the recommendation of the political establishment. So the political Establishment cannot risk another exercise in Democracy – no more than can the EU, which is why the whole fascist edifice was constructed long before any votes were possible. WE AT FREENATIONS URGE ALL DEMOCRATS AND PATRIOTS IN EUROPE TO ADOPT IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY THE METHOD OF VOTER POWER DESCRIBED ON THE SOUTH MOLTON DECLARATION WEBSITE www.southmoltondeclaration.org.uk.
